Kidnapping and Awareness

Let's be honest now, this used to be a very rare thing to hear about in the media but now I can guarantee you that every few day's there are more examples of kidnapping at varied levels. Children are kidnapped by estranged family members and desperate people, corporate executives are kidnapped for ransom money and most harrowing of all anyone in extremist areas; are kidnapped and very often killed.

Kidnapping has now become the norm for all terrorists and they use this for the same objectives as mentioned before, money, media coverage and revenge. In South America there are over 6000 or more kidnappings a year; 90% of the victims are treated exceptionally well and in some cases they become friends in some form. One man whom shall remain nameless for his own personal security is on first named terms with his kidnappers and has been kidnapped 15 times. I can't really comment on the security of this person but I feel that there have been no changes in his patterns of behaviour. I know this mans boss and have ran courses for their corporation (Large well known US company)

Don't become a Victim

To realise the measures you should adopt to reduce the risk; you first have to understand a little more about a kidnapping attempt.

Careful meticulous planning, not random opportunity evolves into a kidnap attempt. They will carry out months of painstaking surveillance. Many kidnappers will gather so much intelligence and will know to the exact second when a particular event will take place.

Selection of the Victim

Kidnappers will select the easiest target just as a wild animal will select and stalk its prey. The victim will normally display similar patterns of behaviour that is repetitive in nature or that leave weak gaps within the personal security of the person.

It follows then that the most effective way of dealing with these risks is to identify the weak points in your own personal security and to change the a patterns of behaviour. For example if you go to the shopping mall every Saturday and do the same thing every week, you are then displaying patterns of behaviour that are habitual and offer the Terrorist the opportunities to carry out the kidnap.

There are measures you can take to try to reduce the risks of kidnapping, the first and most important is to become more self aware. Awareness is the key component to all elements of personal security and not just physical awareness. Simple measures to take are as follows;

Change your patterns of behaviour so that they are not habitual.
Become increasingly vigilant and see the unexpected
Care should be taken with the security of information
Adopt simple security measures that are in the book

Typical Pattern of behaviour of Kidnappers

Surveillance

This is where the kidnappers will carry out painstaking surveillance over a long period of time to ascertain the Risks verses the success and any weaknesses in the security of the target.

Abduction

After the aforementioned the plan moves into its second stage, that of the actual abduction. The kidnappers will have evasive measures planned and a meticulous times operation.

Transfer

Kidnappers will then transfer the victim to a place of holding. This is normally only temporary as they need to keep moving to camouflage the trail.

Demands

Captors will make there demands after safe contact is established. Normally in the case of south American captors this will be for financial gain. In places of higher risk such as Iraq then the chances of bringing the captors back safe are diminished and financial gain is not the motivation.

Negotiations

Trained Negotiators will then be employed in order to bring the situation to a satisfactory conclusion.

Conditions

This is normally conditions of release

Release

Freedom

Time to go home but before this can happen, an intelligence debriefing will normally take place to gain important intelligence to the modus operandi of the organisation that carried out the Kidnapping.

The most dangerous stages in any kidnap attempt are at the first stages and depending on the organisation involved may lead to innocents being killed, even the victim.

Steps to freedom

There are very important measures to take in order to ensure that you survive; mental attitude and agility is the key to survival. Your awareness will be able to take in all types of information that could help you as well as keeping you alert at all times. You may notice smells, sounds, sense direction and your environment; all this information may be just what you need to help authorities.

Psychic Awareness

Time and time again, I have tried to bring to you the importance of developing your intuition as a form of invisible protection. At no time in life would this be needed than when the threat of Kidnapping looms. To develop your intuition means to raise your awareness to a higher degree that may save your life. Throughout this book, I have also given you examples of how your intuition could pre warn you. Imagine if you will, you could pick up the intentions of your captors just by tuning in or receiving feelings that warn you off. You will survive without being kidnapped, anyone can do it. After all I did.
